Mediterranea |
So must the South be. The
village on the hill, the cypresses. Was Ibarz an early riser? Or did he
observe the sunrise so often because he spent all night painting? An individual
uplifting song was transformed in his painting with red sky, 'Before the
Window a Bird' (1984). The small songbird with the heart-shaped head in
it matches the prints 'Song of Dawn' and 'Empúries'. A prelude
to 'Still Life with Bird', the blue caraffe, Botella. Over a dozen prints
were published in the space of eight years in collaboration with the Sala
Gaspar. They are love songs to a secluded existence. All of his lithographs
could be titled Mediterranea.
The window, the bird, the hill, the house, the sea and the still life
all contribute. What represents everyday life for the painter Miquel Ibarz,
evokes for others an idyllic landscape with sweet fruit and summer light.

Let Me Paint the Blue Laughter of Sea and Sky Messengers of the Morning |
These brilliant color lithographs on offer
from Grafos Verlag are provided with romantic titles. They throw open
a window onto the far reaches of the sea and are at the same time made
to communicate a sense of coziness, to start the day off with cheer.
Some of these prints include: Let
Me Paint the Blue Laughter of Sea and Sky, I
Gave You the Gardens of the South, Lemons, I
Gave You the Fruits of the Earth, Ampurias. In his House
on the Sea (1985), the House on the coast of the Empurdà
region, under a deep, violet-blue sky, appears quite still, as if looking
within. The sky is night-blue in Messengers of the Morning, the
wind picks up lightly. Songbirds were really daily guests at his house.
This lithographic composition also goes back to sketches from cut out,
colored tissue-paper which Ibarz pasted onto place to create a preliminary
sketch that would give the impression of layers of color. Hence the
color tones, the layered effect. He then went over it with the paintbrush.

Gireasoles |
And finally, there is Girasolesirasoles
(Sunflowers), in which Ibarz plays with the brilliance of pure red,
blue, yellow and purple. He applies the colors over one another in transparent
layers. The landscape of Empurdà, the sea and the pine trees,
the village, Ibarz's homeland, and at the same time, recollections of
holidays for many. ek |
