Lithographie Nr. 100 Entwurf zu einer Plastik
(Lithograph No. 100: Preliminary Sketch for a Sculpture)

Particularly fortunate is the fact that Belling preserved his creative force into his old age. In the 60's after his return to Germany, he created a great many famous sculptures for public spaces, such as the large bronze 'Segelmotiv' (Sail Motif, 1959-62) for the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft in Hamburg and 'Symbol der Gemeinsamkeit' (Symbol of Unity, 1966-67). These were abstract spatial bodies recalling his beginnings. In 1967 a six-meter high abstract sculpture, 'Blüte' (Blossom), found a place in Munich for the 1972 Olympic Games. Rudolf Belling was also active in the field of drawing and graphic art, a fine example of which is given here.

His later works, bronzes such as 'Aktion 64' (Action 64), 'Capriccio' (1966) and 'Tier' (Animal, 1969) were accompanied by sketches, drawings and lithographs. Forms and ideas which are discernible in the earlier works return, more serene, in his later work. This lithograph done on stone by Rudolf Belling on offer at Grafos Verlag (printed and edited by Erker-Presse, St. Gallen) becomes the inspiration for an entire series of sculptures which occupied a key position in their time.
