Horst
Antes
Biographical Sketch
Horst Antes was born on October 18, 1936 in Heppenheim, germany. He is the principal
representative of 'Fantastic
Realism' and one of the first members of the 'Neuen Figuration' Group. Studied
at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Karlsruhe under Grieshaber (1957-59), and has been teaching there since 1965. He became
faculty chairman in 1984.
Guest professor at the State Institute for Fine Arts in Berlin (1967-68). The figure became the
central theme in his
work, which resisted full abstraction. Antes' painterly search resulted in a prototypical figure for
his art, the
'Kopffüssler' (or 'Head-Footer'), which he also often produced in sculptural form during
the course of his consistent
artistic development. It is present, for example, in 'Pleasure Garden with 7 Monuments to
Pleasure', a painted steel
sheet (1967) in Karlsruhe. Whether brightly expressive or monochrome, nearly classical
compositions with real -
surreal forms or, as in his earliest works, blank spaces in ascetic withdrawal, Antes almost
always represents the human
figure as a solitary being, at times in a compartment or dwelling-like space. Antes' extensive
paintings and graphic
works are complemented by his sculptural pieces. His works are present in museums all around
the world, and he has
won many awards and honors. He lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe and Florence. ek
