Joan Barbarà
Biographical
Sketch
The Catalan artist Joan Barbarà is regarded as one of the most gifted etchers on the
international scene. He was born in
1927 in Barcelona. His first group exhibit took place in 1943, followed by exhibits in the 50's
including the Biennial
Hispanoamérica. Received his first award for graphic works in 1957, a stipendium from
the French Institute.
Collaborated in one of the most renowned graphic printing studios in Paris - Georges Le Blanc,
Roger Lacourière-Frélaut and Ferdinand Mourlot (1957-58). In 1959 he
founded the 'Atelier de Recherches Plastiques et Techniques
Chalcographiques.' He returned to Barcelona in 1960 and has been living there since.
Established a copperplate etching
studio with Gustau Gili, and in the year 1975 opened his own studio for graphic art. He has
worked on commissions
from other artists as well as for the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona and Grafos Verlag of Vaduz,
Liechtenstein. The most
renowned painters have sought out his studio, among them Miró, Tàpies, Beuys
and Schumacher. Exhibits, workshops
and presentations on etching demonstrate his commitment to the art of printing. Parallel to
these activities, he produces
his own paintings and graphics works, which amply confirm his technical mastery of etching.
