Michael Byron
Biographical Sketch
Michael Byron was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1954. He lives in both New York
and Amsterdam. His work
can be considered together with that of Julio Galán, Guillermo Kuitca, Saint Clair
Cemin and Juliâo Sarmento. It lies in
the Surreal more than the Symbolist current, with its whimsical qualities, and shows tendencies
towards a new
romanticism or a modern-day idealism with its symbols of life and death.
He has exhibited since 1984 in Europe and the US (cf. Catalogue: Wimmer Gallery, N. Y.
Galerie Gravier - Paris;
Witte de With and Boymans van Beunigen Museum, Rotterdam, among others). In 1991 a
larger retrospective was held
in Rotterdam's Center for Contemporary Art and in the above-mentioned galleries. Over one
hundred drawings from
1990 were displayed, as well as a sample of five years of his painting. A large collection of
Byron's work can be found
at the Boymans van Beunigen Museum, Rotterdam. ek
