About Montserrat Gudiol's
Art
Montserrat Gudiol's art has a symbolic component,
occasionally oneiric, although her paintings and drawings since the 80's have taken on realistic
features to a large extent. The figures begin to detach from the former, completely spiritual
atmosphere, the spaces of the subconscious. It is
almost as if her figures blossom anew as they come into contact with the reality of everyday life
from the surface of the painting. Nonetheless, the
sense of secrecy and the symbolic character remain intact. Her figures, whether realistic or
archetypal, take in this everyday world from an
absorbed and strangely trance-like state, a world which in some paintings appear abstract and
empty. In a certain series of drawings in particular,
lines divide the space, they cross through it and crucify it (cf. Història de l'art
català Vol. IX ).
