Werner
Tübke
Biographical
Sketch
Werner Tübke was born on July 30, 1929 in Schönebeck on Elbe. Studied
decorative painting at the Institute for
Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig (1948-50). Studied art instruction and psychology in
Greifswald (1950-53).
Professorship at the Institute for Graphic and Book Arts in Leipzig since 1972. Study trip to
Bulgaria, Belgium and
through germany. First trip to Italy in 1971-72. Tübke creates allusions to other works,
he is an expert copyist and a
quick-change artist. The forms of the Renaissance and particularly of Mannerism suit him and
he transfers some of
these themes to modern-day settings. The content of his work can be ascribed to a realistic
interpretation and is
characterised by a socialist art style. As with Stelzmann, Tübke places a great deal of
weight on paintings filled with
figures. He creates monumental, meticulous panoramas and wall murals (University of Leipzig
1971, Bad
Frankenhausen 1976-88). His prints reflect an incredible mastery of the graphic arts. His
graphic show a blatant
sarcasm. ek
