Byron, Michael

Born in 1954 in Providence, Rhode Island, Michael Byron lives with one foot in New York and the other in Amsterdam. Byron's work is mentioned along with Julio Galán, Guillermo Kuitca, Saint Clair Cemin and Juliâo Sarmento. He represents symbolic rather than surreal art, not excluding bizarreness, with tangents to a new romanticism or contemporary idealism and its allegories of life and death. Exhibitions since 1984 in Europe and the USA (cf. catalogue: Wimmer Galery N. Y. Galerie Gravier - Paris; Witte de With, and Museum Boymans van Beunigen, Rotterdam among others). In 1991 a first major retrospective took place at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and the above-mentioned galleries, showing over a hundred drawings from 1990 and a look at five years of painting.
